Two honest lines on this one. First: clutch work here is for small cars — Mark doesn't take truck clutches, full stop, and the assistant will say so rather than let you haul a pickup in for nothing. Second: there's a difference between clutch work and replacing the whole transmission — a full transmission replacement is the job Mark sends out to a shop he trusts, and he'll point you their way himself. Beyond that, small cars foreign and domestic are welcome; only BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar are off the list (a Mini is fine).
The tell is the mismatch between engine and road speed: revs jump when you accelerate but the car lags behind, especially uphill or in a high gear. Add a changed pedal feel, a shudder when you pull away, or a burnt smell after hard use, and the clutch moves to the top of the suspect list. No. Clutch jobs at the shop are for small cars only — a truck clutch is one of the few jobs Mark flat doesn't take, no matter the make. He'd rather be upfront about that here than have you burn a trip. Trucks are still welcome for brakes, maintenance and plenty of other work.
Then you'll hear that straight too. Clutch work and a full transmission replacement are different jobs — the replacement is the one Mark refers out to a trusted shop rather than doing in-house. It's still worth talking to him first, because he'll make the hand-off himself and see that you're pointed somewhere good.
